I work with awesome people
So for the last several weeks I’ve been part of a team working on a large project with a crazy deadline. Seriously, an insane amount of work with a tight deadline being done in a suboptimal manner… a total case study for the problems that Google Wave is designed to fix.
Anyway, one of the deliverables from this team was a PowerPoint presentation. We needed some graphics. There were some charts but they didn’t do a great job of conveying how things were related or grouped.
This is the “before” slide:
This was not going to cut it. Using the most excellent ideas in slide:ology I sketched out some options. Here’s what I came up with:
We were on a really tight deadline — as in noon, today — to turn in the first draft of the preso. I took these sketches over to Steve and said, “Steve, do you think you could create some of these shapes for us to use in a PowerPoint slide… in 45 minutes? And ‘no’ is a perfectly acceptable answer.”
Steve’s response: “Let me see what I can do.”
In half an hour Steve came back with shapes he’d put together in Adobe Illustrator, which we used to create this alternate slide:
And the new slide isn’t perfect… after holiday break we’ll need to spiff it up a bit and maybe work with the colors. But Steve did it in 30 minutes. Like I said, I work with awesome people.
